Long-term Observation of Kampo (Japanese herbal medicine) Therapy on Individuals with Autism

Abstract

The auther investigated Kampo,or traditional Japanese herbal medicin,as a treatment for the affective disorders of autism,and in 1993 discovered that some types of Kampo such as Dai-saiko-to are effective in improving such disorders. This report details the effectiveness of this therapy based on evaluations performed by the families of autistic individuals in December 2001. The investigation employed the Numerical Rating Scale(NRS) method. The starting age of therapy ranged from 2 years and 4 months old to 32 years and 3 months old,and the period of treatment was from 2 months to 9 years and 6 months. There were 6 females and 68 males subjects.Improvements of over 50% were seen in males for sleeping disorders(100%) , hyperkinesis (92.2%) ,tantrun (88.3%) ,panic (95.6%) ,self-injury (82. 1%) ,impulsive violence (89.5%) ,insistence on sameness (74.4%) ,obsessive-compulsive behavior (65.2%) ritualistic behavior (95.5%) ,comprehension (86.2%) , communication (85.3%) ,conversation ability (32.4%) , and participation in group activities (76.2%).
